Choose a Name for Your Small Business
You might think that a name is just a name and that it will have little impact on the success of your business: however, you would be mistaken. A business name can help you establish the overall vibe of your business, from strictly professional to downright funky, to a dozen things in between.
When choosing a name for your business, you have two options. Either you can choose a name that describes exactly what the business is and what benefits it offers, or you can choose a name that has nothing to do with the business at all. If possible, always pick a name that describes or indicates the company’s business. And make sure you choose a name that easy to remember and easy to spell or pronounce. If people can’t remember your business name, it makes finding your business or getting word-of-mouth referrals more difficult.
When choosing a business name, you’ll also need to make sure that your business name is not already being used by another business or group. Unfortunately, it’s fairly common for a small business to choose a name that’s similar to that of another enterprise. Do not risk litigation by copying someone else’s brand name. So if you’re starting a small, local business, you can usually feel reasonably secure searching for name conflicts at the state and local level.
